Wow! It’s been over 2 months since we’ve posted anything meaningful, and though I’ve meant to give everyone an update I keep forgetting. The short of it is, is what started out as a Paschal break morphed into a long absence. It’s like we failed a perception check, fell into a deep hole, and just recently were rescued by a group of awkward elven hermits. So what happened to our intrepid geek priests? We had Great and Holy Week, followed by Pascha, and did nothing that following week. Then I went on vacation for a couple of weeks and we still didn’t do much, though I still needed to put out the final ‘I Don’t Know Anything About…” podcast. Personally I just got busy in May, we went to see GoG2, and by the time Fr. Steve and I hooked back up in June I found out he had accepted a call in Lafayette, LA, and was moving away in later in the month. Great news for him, to be sure! I tell everyone I know that Fr. Steve is one of the best priests I know; he’s the kindest, most gentle, genius priests I’ve ever met. But we paused for longer to get sorted.
We did see Wonder Woman, which was pretty incredible. Honestly, speaking for myself, I’m tired of all the sexual tension in movies, so even though the whole movie was great the fact people had to take a break from saving the world to have sex bugs me.
Forced to make friends now I joined a D&D group, comprised of two Methodist pastors and five of their parishioners, and that’s been pretty fun. I forgot how 90% of the appeal is the social aspect that happens during the game and less the game itself. I’ve been playing more Witcher 3 than I care to admit.
The new Doctor is a woman, and I have trouble with it for continuity issues inasmuch as needing to operate in patriarchal historical times. And don’t give me the alien nonsense; I haven’t seen a non-humanoid Time Lord so it’s not like Amy and Rory were flying around the universe with a giant green Slitheen. Call me a misogynist, whatever. If they change focus and stay in present time earth, or just visit alien planets then I don’t think it’s a problem. Jodie Whittaker is a fabulous actress either way.
Part of the reason why I wanted to break was I wasn’t sure if Fr. Steve wanted to still try to record once he’s settled down south. I know our tagline is ‘Two Priests with a +4 in Geekery”, but let’s be honest, I might have a +4, but Fr. Steve rolls a natural 20 every time he opens his mouth about anything related to this podcast. I merely adopted the geek, whereas he was born into it. Perhaps podcasting isn’t of interest to him.
I went to see him today while he packs his moving van (and he gifted me 3500 sleeved and boxed comics) and he said he’s still interested in podcasting. So here’s where we stand:
- I still need to edit and publish a podcast episode
- I’m probably going to sunset the Instagram account because it’s basically just a ton of other bloggers and podcasters liking one another’s stuff.
- We’re going to start keeping regular podcasts again, though I’m not sure if it’ll be weekly or what. I think we’ll have more flexibility so it could make a weekly more feasible than it was before. I don’t know when we’ll start again. I want to give Fr. Steve some time to get settled. Maybe I’ll do a couple things in the meantime.
- 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons is a whole lot of fun, and if you can find a local group you should join it. If you only have a couple friends you could get the Starter Set and start bopping around The Forgotten Realms like a pro. If you want to argue with me about this feel free to listen to our episode where we unpack the number of misconceptions about D&D and fantasy in general.
Enjoy your summer! I hope we can all talk soon!
